Somerville Maker Festival Postponed for Rain Date: Sunday August 15th

Due to the excessive heat wave and 60% chance of thunderstorms (robots don’t like either), we’re postponing the Fab16: Somerville Festival to Sunday, August 15th. Weather is looking beautiful and a very comfortable 81 degrees with 10% chance of precipitation. Better ice cream and arepa weather as well.

Please help us spread the word! We can’t wait to see you all for this awesome display of makery, science, and innovation.

Fab16: Somerville Maker Showcase this Saturday

On August 14th 10 AM - 4 PM,  FabVille, Fab Foundation, Somerville High School Robotics Team, Cambridge Hackspace, BosLabs, and Somernova invite you to celebrate the great work of local innovators, entrepreneurs, artists, and makers at Fab16: Somerville Maker Showcase. Join over a dozen local organizations for live panel discussions, robot demos, live music, and food & ice cream for all ages! Stay for the raffle and win local prizes, and get yourself a robot-made S’more courtesy of the Somerville Robotics Team. We’ll have a few special robot guests as well :).

When: Saturday, August 14th, 10 AM- 4 PM (Rain date August 15th)

Where: The Alley, 24 Dane Street, Somerville, MA

Also, we’re still looking for a few volunteers to help put on this great event. Duties may include, operating a 3D printer (will train), tabling the FabVille table, and setting up or breaking down before or after the event.Sign up today!

Due to Somerville Public Schools being closed today and tomorrow, our Micro:bit workshop planned for tonight is being postponed. The new date is to be determined, check back for updates.

The status of future class cancellations will be determined on a case by case basis depending on decisions of SPS being open.

Enter through the main door. A door monitor will greet you and let you inside the building. Take the stairs up one floor. Walk down the main hallway to the end and there you will find the Fabville classroom.

Join us Thursday evenings in February - April for introduction classes to Fabville’s various tools and programs! All classes are free to the public from 6-8pm, with facilitators Justin Schmidt or Halley Murray. Visit fabville.eventbrite.com to register for classes.

Flat is Boring: Intro to 3D Printing at Fabville
Want to 3D print something at Fabville, but have never used a 3D printer before? This is the place to start! Learn the basics of how 3D printers work, how to find printable 3D models on the internet that you can download, modify, and print, and learn how to get started in 3D modeling with Tinkercad

Decked-Out Decals: Intro to Vinyl Cutting at Fabville
Master the vinyl cutter at Fabville to design, cut, prepare, and apply your own custom vinyl stickers. Learn how to make your own custom vector graphics using gravit.io and Roland CutStudio, and explore how to prepare graphics from other design programs (like Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator) to use with the vinyl cutter.

Freakin' Laser Beams!: Intro to laser cutting and engraving at Fabville
Learn how to operate the laser cutter at Fabville. This workshop will cover making your own designs with gravit.io and exporting/preparing your work for the laser to cut or engrave materials like cardboard, plywood, and acrylic.

Intro to Micro:bit
Learn the basics of this tiny computer you can program to make lights blink and use other input sensors. If you’ve never used code before but would like to understand it, this will be a great class! Similar to Scratch, Micro:bit uses drag-and-drop block coding you can piece together to make commands.

Intro to Arduino
An introduction to the most loved simple computer around, the Arduino is an open-source electronic prototyping platform enabling users to create interactive electronic objects.

New 2020 Fabville Open Shop Hours & Location!

Greetings from FabVille! We are now set-up in a new space at the Healey Elementary School in Somerville. We are launching our 2020 Open Shop hours starting Thursday January 2nd, 6-8pm. Come to our launch party and see our new space! We have a 3D printer, vinyl cutter and laser cutter available for use with assistance from the shop manager. There will be pizza and snacks. Come meet the staff and let us know what projects and classes you’re interested in seeing this year at Fabville.

Fabville CLOSED tomorrow 3/04/19

Due to the projected snow storm, all schools and district offices in the Somerville Public School district will be closed on Monday, March 4th. All afternoon and evening school activities scheduled for March 4th are also cancelled so there will be no Open Shop tomorrow. Stay warm and we’ll see you Tuesday!
